Why Procrastination Holds You Back (And How to Overcome It)
Procrastination isn’t just a bad habit. It’s a mindset that holds you back from reaching your full potential. It keeps you stuck in the same place, filled with doubt and frustration. But the good news? You have the power to change.
Before we dive into how to overcome procrastination, it’s important to understand why it happens in the first place. Procrastination is often a result of:
• Fear of failure: You put things off because you’re afraid of not doing things perfectly.
• Lack of clarity: Without a clear vision of where you’re going, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
• Low self-esteem: When you don’t believe in your ability to achieve your goals, procrastination seems like an easy escape.
• Perfectionism: Striving for perfection can paralyze you, leading to avoidance.
Understanding these triggers is the first step in breaking free from procrastination. But once you’re aware, it’s time to take action. Here’s how you can start upleveling your life and pushing past procrastination.
Step 1: Reframe Your Ambition as a Lifelong Journey
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is treating ambition as a one-time event. They think that once they reach a certain goal, they’ll have “made it.” The reality is, ambition is a lifelong pursuit. There’s always something to learn, achieve, and evolve toward.
Reframing ambition as a journey instead of a destination allows you to focus on progress, not perfection. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by a big goal, break it down into smaller, manageable steps. This mindset shift is key to overcoming procrastination. When you treat your goals as ongoing milestones, you free yourself from the pressure to “arrive” somewhere.
Step 2: Increase Your Capacity to Achieve
Another critical part of overcoming procrastination is understanding your capacity—or what you’re truly capable of achieving. Ask yourself, “What is my potential?” and “What resources do I need to unlock it?”
Here’s how you can increase your capacity to succeed:
• Develop new skills: Identify areas where you need to grow and seek out opportunities to improve.
• Surround yourself with support: Join communities or hire a coach (like me!) to keep you accountable.
• Leverage tools and resources: Invest in tools that will streamline your process and make your work easier.
When you increase your capacity, you create momentum. And momentum is what helps you push through procrastination.
Step 3: The 4-Step Process to Overcome Procrastination
In my coaching practice, I guide my clients through a four-step process to help them take consistent action toward their goals. Here’s a quick overview of the steps:
1. Awareness: The first step to overcoming procrastination is developing awareness. This means getting clear on where you are, where you want to go, and what’s holding you back. By creating this clarity, you can build a plan to move forward.
2. Intention: Once you’re clear on your goals, it’s time to set your intention. Your intention must be input-based, not outcome-based. In other words, focus on the actions and habits you need to adopt to get to where you want to be, rather than obsessing over the end result.
3. Discipline: Discipline is the bridge between intention and action. It’s the ability to stay consistent with your actions, even when motivation is low. When you develop discipline, you create habits that support your goals.
4. Decide: The final step is to make a decision. The word “decide” comes from the Latin “caedere,” meaning to “cut off.” Once you decide to pursue your goal, you cut off all other options. Commitment is the key to breaking free from procrastination.
Step 4: Make Today Your “Due Day”
The most important thing you can do today is get started. Many of us get caught up in thinking that tomorrow will be a better time to start. The truth is, today is the best day to take action. Don’t wait for the “perfect” moment—create it now.
As you move forward, remember that you’ll never be younger than you are today. So, take that first step toward reaching your potential, no matter how small it may seem. The key to overcoming procrastination is simply to begin.
The Power of Small, Consistent Actions
Overcoming procrastination doesn’t require a complete life overhaul. What it requires is consistent action—small steps taken every day that move you closer to your goals. These actions build momentum and help you break the cycle of procrastination.
